It is important to note that all UV systems must be used with a sediment filter. Sediment that is allowed to pass through the UV system can harbor bacteria and create shadows inside the chamber that can decrease the effectiveness of the system.
In a mini UV sterilizer, a special lamp placed in a quartz casing emits light with a wavelength of 254 nanometers. Light interacts with the DNA of microorganisms and destroys its structure.
The efficacy of UV radiation as a disinfectant in water purification is a function of the intensity of the UV light (i.e. the actual bulb in the unit), the amount of time during which a volume of water is exposed to UV radiation, the clarity of the water entering the unit, and the maintenance of the unit.
